Welcome to Year 6

Year 6 is the final year of primary school and our children at Brindishe Schools continue to experience an exciting, broad and balanced curriculum so that they are prepared and ready to embark on their next stage of education at secondary school. At Brindishe Schools, we have developed a curriculum overview for each year group which details the focus for each subject in each half term. Please click on the Year 6 curriculum overview below to find out more:

Year 6 CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

In Year 6, the children will focus on the end of Key Stage 2 National Curriculum assessments, otherwise known as the Standard Assessment Tests (SATs). However, we want the children’s final year to be full of exciting learning opportunities so our aim is that there will also be plenty of fun and valuable learning.

English

In Year 6 we want our children to have lots of opportunities to read independently both at home and school and to read across a range of genres. Our children continue to build on their comprehension skills as they analyse more complex books and share their understanding of characters, themes and text types. You can find out more about supporting your child’s reading at Key Stage 2 by clicking on the link below.

In Year 6, the children will continue to develop as writers, becoming more independent and creative. The children will build upon the goals and expectations in Year 5 as they write for a range of different audiences and for a variety of purposes. Handwriting, spelling, grammar, and punctuation are all important aspects of writing that the children will explore and build on their skills from previous years. There are statutory spelling lists for children in Year 5 and Year 6 which you can see below:

Maths

In Year 6, our children will apply the maths they already know alongside developing new skills to help solve more complex problems. They will work with numbers up to 10 million and begin to learn about algebra and ratio. They will convert measurements, calculate volumes and learn about circles. They will draw and interpret pie charts and find averages.

Key Stage 2 SATs

At the end of Year 6, in the month of May, all Year 6 children across England sit national tests in Reading, Maths and Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (GPS). These tests are both set and marked externally, and the results are used to measure the school’s performance. Your child’s marks will be used in conjunction with teacher assessment to give a broader picture of their attainment. There is an information leaflet for parents that has been produced by the Department for Education with further information below:
